Soldering Safety and Advice for Different Electronic Components

Soldering involves a process of joining two or more metals by melting and putting filler metal into the joint. Flux is used to facilitate the soldering process. For this purpose, filler materials are available in different alloys for various applications. In electronics assembly, the alloy of 63% tin and 37% lead is the most commonly used.

When you buy electronic components for your device, you should know that the required soldering techniques because some products require special care while soldering. Here is the essential advice for different components.

  • Resistors: No special precautions.
  • Diodes: Must be connected the correct way round. a= anode, k= cathode
  • IC holders: Ensure that the notch is at the correct end.
  • Capacitors, electrolytic: These are marked + or – near one lead and must be soldered the correct way round.
  • ICs: Carefully insert the ICs the correct way round in their holders after the all soldering is complete.
  • Battery clips and buzzers and other parts with wires: Red (+) and black( –) wires must be connected in the  correct order.

Now when you know the precautions for different applications, have a look at the safety precautions you need to follow when soldering.

Soldering Safety Precautions

1.  Work in an environment that is well lit and ventilated.
2.  Unplug the soldering iron when it is unattended.
3.  Be careful to keep clothes, hair, power cables et., away from the soldering iron tip and the metal shaft.
5.  Always handle the iron by its plastic handle.
6.  Do not point the circuit towards yourself whilst trimming down component legs.

Soldering Iron

1.    Never touch the element of the soldering iron....400°C!
2.    Hold wires to be heated with tweezers or clamps.
3.    Keep the cleaning sponge wet during use.
4.    Do not put the soldering iron on the workbench, return the soldering iron to its stand when not in   use.
5.    Turn unit off and unplug when not in use.

These simple tips will prevent you and your device from any damage. Any error or mistake can cause serious damage.
